DeStress Week_A-Frame_FinalFull list of De-Stress Fest Activities below!

Finals week is almost upon us and students may be wondering how they could get through finals in one piece. Luckily, the Library is here to help!

“De-stress Fest” is a student-led effort brought forth by Henry Madden Library student assistant, Roberto Hernandez.

Hernandez, a music major in his fourth year, came up with the idea while working at the Circulation desk where he noticed the pressure and stress that students were under during finals week. Inspired to take action, Hernandez wanted to do something to relieve their stress.

He approached the Dean of Library Services Del Hornbuckle about stress relief activities that could take place during finals week.

“I originally saw the Dean while working at the desk and proceeded to ask if she was available to meet about events for finals week that would help relieve some of the stress during finals from the campus community,” says Hernandez.

Hernandez thought it would be fun to provide a movie screening and game night for students to take a break from studying. He sought out help from ASI and other student organizations on campus.

Hernandez worked closely with First Year Experience Librarian Ginny Barnes, who was already in the process of planning activities for finals week.

“Ginny helped tremendously with scheduling meetings and contacting ASI,” explained Hernandez. “Since I work four jobs, run the Fresno State Swim Club, and go to school as a full time student, I relied on Ginny a lot.”

The week before finals, student organizations from around campus will bring a variety of activities into the Library. ASI will provide a space for students to be creative with coloring tables, puzzles and Legos.

Barnes hopes that the “De-Stress Fest” gives students the opportunity to pause and relax in the chaos of finals.

“We want our focus to be self-care and taking time to relax a little bit and find some encouragement to keep going and believe in yourself,” says Barnes.

During the week of finals, students can look forward to a live performance from the Fresno State Chamber Music Ensembles in the Ellipse Gallery, a game night and tournament with the Fresno State Esports program, and a finals week “pup talk” from special guest Victor E. Bulldog.

Sarah McDaniel, Director of Learning and User Services for the Henry Madden Library, has been working with Barnes to improve students’ experiences while the library is open for 24 hour study during finals week.

A 10 pm study break will feature coffee donated by Starbucks and Rice Krispie Treats donated by ASI. ASI will also provide free blue books and Scantrons to students who come to the library overnight. For safety reasons, everyone must exit the Library at midnight, then students must swipe a valid student ID card to re-enter the 24-hour study area of the Library. ASI teamed up with the Library, Police Department, and others to provide additional lighting, security and custodial services to make 24-hour study safe and enjoyable.

“We planned things that are fun and relaxing that hopefully students will enjoy,” says McDaniel. We are trying to do a little experimentation to see what students find most useful.”

Barnes and McDaniel, both new to Fresno State this Fall, have been reaching out to partners like the Learning Center, Off-Campus Student Life, the Student Health & Counseling Center, and the Laureate Lab to create programming that fosters student engagement and learning throughout the year. Barnes and McDaniel invite students to suggest any future de-stress activities that could take place in the Library.

Events like these make Roberto Hernandez’s job as a library student assistant more meaningful.

Working at the library gives me an opportunity to help individuals in everyday life,” Hernandez expressed. “Whether it be helping to find a book or being the little piece of kindness someone needed that day, the Library has given me the satisfaction of knowing I have helped someone. It’s due to this job that I was able to eventually have the opportunity to talk to the Dean and propose an event that I hope will benefit everyone who attends.”
